Why is RegmagiK good for you?

Like any tool, it's only good when you need it and use it. Sometimes you know you need it, sometimes you don't. For now I can answer only if you know a free tool Regedit available as part of Microsoft Windows operating system. RegmagiK is designed to perform most of the same tasks as Regedit for example searching for or selecting a certain key or value in Windows Registry and verifying, modifying or deleting it.

Getting Started with RegmagiK

This is step-by-step walkthrough introducing and explaining unique features of RegmagiK.

This page is work in progress. Thank you for your patience. If you you would like to contribute to this help page or have a useful Registry Tip, please, e-mail me the screenshot or instructions or both.

This is a sample screenshot from Windows XP. It demonstrates one of the popular registry tweaks: changing timeout of Windows XP built-in slide show viewer. By default the slide show displays each image for 5 seconds and it can not be changed via Windows User Interface. Adding the Timeout DWORD value and setting it to the desired number of milliseconds does the trick.

This screenshot also illustrates several RegmagiK features:

toolbar and address bar (both can be turned on/off independently)

partial expand in the left pane, little overlay images indicate that there are hidden items

in-place value editing in the right pane

bottom search results pane with convenient 1 click search command.

Next sample illustrates the following RegmagiK features:

  • smart Directory recognition in the right pane view - some Data column subitems have Folder icon
  • if a value is of type REG_EXPAND_SZ or expandable string as DevicePath in this example it will also be recognized as a valid path
  • when you hover over the Folder image the mouse cursor turns into Link Select or Hand cursor - that means you can click and go to Explorer
  • with one click on folder image you can open Windows Explorer and the folder specified in Registry will be selected
  • If you activate in-place edit of value data and begin typing a path to any directory autocomplete feature will be automatically activated

Next sample demonstrates the following RegmagiK features:

  • smart GUID recognition in the right pane view - subitem has Gear image
  • goto GUID with one click on Gear image (when you hover above the image the mouse cursor turns into Link Select or Hand cursor)
  • partial expand in the left pane, allows you to see only relevant keys, and little overlay images indicate that there are hidden items
