Versions and features

//4.8.6 -12/9/2005 New feature: "Quick switch to REGEDIT". REGEDIT will even automatically go to the same key that was selected in RegmagiK (Windows XP required to go to the same key. May not work on foreign versions of Windows). (also some minor changes - Export toolbar button image changed, Simplified New Bookmark dialog. Change in French: do not statically link to MFC dll - smaller exe size. English version also uses dynamic linking. If anyone has problems because of that, please, let me know).

//4.8.5 - get rid of Quick Picks in Find dialog, make it wider to show more of search root key, default to all keys
add Read-Only configuration (todo: figure out what to do with bookmarks)
recognize path that starts with \SystemRoot\
use UPX to pack executable
default search under All Registry keys instead of current key (current key is available in the drop down after all hives)
note: on some systems searching under CLASSES_ROOT is slower that searching all Registry

version 4.8.4 was released on 11/5/2005

  • Links to Registry from HTML pages. For sample HTML-Registry links click here.
  • Display Registry value data type in a separate column
  • Change order of list view columns with drag-n-drop
  • FIXED BUG: Export long binary values. Please update your copy.

version 4.7 was released on 9/15/2005 with new commands:

version 4.6 was released on 3/15/2005 with much faster Registry search engine.

version 4.5.5 was released on 12/27/2004. Better support of localized versions. Improved French translation. English version was not noticeably changed.

version 4.5.4 was released on December 19, 2004. Fix status bar message displayed after search for invalid CLSIDs. Windows 95 support is back.

version 4.5.3 was released on December 15, 2004. Improved activation code verification algorithm. Search is 30% faster and reports search statistics.

version 4.5.2 was released on December 12, 2004. Fixed DDE problem found in Visual C++ 7.1: shortcuts open correctly now. In version 4.5.1 shortcuts open correctly only if RegmagiK was not running. Thanks for helpful hint, David Lowndes.

version 4.5.1 was released on November 27, 2004. Fixed activation algorithm.

version 4.5 was released on November 23, 2004. Better AutoComplete algorithm - support root names with or without HKEY_ prefix, understand more registry path naming conventions, like (case insensitive) HKLM, HKU, HKCU, HKCC, and HKCR as well as LOCALMACHINE, CURRENTCONFIG, CURRENTUSER, CLASSESROOT (with or without underscore, with or without space, with or without HKEY_ prefix). Easy ways to get to Address bar are: Shift+TAB, Alt+Up, or Alt+D (like in IE). Easy ways to enter registry path in the address bar are: type \ or h or Up/Down Arrow keys on the keyboard. Then pressing TAB or Shift+TAB iterates through the list of matches. To go to entered key press Enter, to exit AutoSuggest mode press Esc.

Improved usability of the Find in Registry dialog: added quick pick of the search root location. Also fixed the way TAB and Enter keys work in the Find dialog when AutoSuggest list is active.

Use system defined Link Select cursor: when the mouse is moved over a clickable area (a link or an image that has an action assigned to it, like "Go to GUID Definition") the mouse cursor turns into Link Select cursor. The actual cursor image is customizable via Control Panel > Mouse > Pointers or directly in the registry. Go to CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Cursors key and set Hand to the full path to a cursor file of your choice. This may be static cursor file with extension .cur or animated cursor with extension .ani.

version 4.4 was released on November 21. Release Notes: Implement Auto Complete for Address bar. When the user is typing into address bar RegmagiK automatically determines available sub-keys and displays them in a list. User can press TAB to navigate this list, then Backslash to type a subkey name or Enter to finis typing and go to the specified key. Root names can be entered with or without HKEY_ prefix. Similar features are available in Find dialog and GoTo dialog.

version 4.3 was released on November 18. Release Notes: Partial Expand has new icons and tooltips; Auto Complete path is available in Edit Value dialog and Edit Value data in the Right Pane and Search Pane.

version 4.2 was released on November 15. Main new features are on left side tree view: new pop-up menu items: Collapse Key and Hide Siblings. Collapse is useful for collapsing partially expanded tree items using the mouse as alternative to pressing Left Arrow on the keyboard. Hide Siblings is useful when you are looking at a key that has many siblings and you are only interested in one. For example when you are looking at specific CLSID subkey you can hid all other CLSIDs from the view.

version 4.1 was released in early November 2004. Main new features are on the edit value dialog - here you can convert value to a different type and it automatically convert strings to binary and back; for DWORD values new spin button can save you some typing, also you can change the display format for DWORD values between Hex and Decimal and apply the change to other RegmagiK views; if you begin DWORD value with 0x it will automatically recognize hexadecimal format, for example 0x10 = 16. Improved integration with Explorer: fixed bug 1: in older version if a value data is c:\ the folder icon is displayed and mouse cursor turns to hand but click does not open c:\ drive in explorer. New version will recognize both D: and D:\ patterns as path to D drive. New trialware protection algorithm requires unique activation code for each user, for quick access I have added a direct link to SWREG site on About dialog and made some other cosmetic changes.

version 4.0 was released in October 2004. Main new feature is the address bar - based on feedback from newsgroups. Also setup is replaced with no install file since many users wanted no-install distribution.

version 3.27 was released in June 2004. Improved main menu and context menus, search pane, and toolbar. Improved Edit Value dialog - add decimal and hex formatting for DWORD values.

Work in progress

Modifying Windows Registry without knowledge of its meaning is dangerous for your PC. Even if you know what you're doing it's better to make a backup first. RegMagiK does not replace regedit.exe. Regmagik does not import .reg files, change access permissions to registry keys, or access Registry on remote computers.

  • Need Un-Hide Siblings and Un-Collapse counterparts of Hide Siblings and Collapse.
  • Need auto-complete feature for address bar - DONE
  • Only single shortcut at a time can be created on desktop by drag and drop
  • Values of type 0 are read-only
  • Help file - DONE, but can be improved and need translation to French
  • Load Hive functionality - DONE
  • Security Permissions functionality
  • Need HKDD for Windows ME?
  • Need activation to work on all drives - DONE

Shareware

Starting with version 3.27 RegmagiK is distributed as Shareware. After the free evaluation period users are expected to register their copy and enter the activation code. Starting with version 4.0 activation code must match the Serial Number, based on the hard drive where RegmagiK.exe is located. This method also works for running RegmagiK from a removable drive on multiple PCs. Evaluation period is 15 days from the first run. Make sure you actually use it before it expires. And don't hesitate to send me your feedback or questions. RegmagiK Help menu contains my contact information.
